Backend Engineer

Role Overview

Cardboard is building the future of storytelling and video editing by running a real video editor in the browser, backed by a serious cloud media pipeline and an AI agent. We are looking for a Fullstack Engineer who can own features end-to-end, from the UI to the backend services that render them. You will work in a fast-moving, high-craft environment alongside an elite team of engineers.

Responsibilities

• Own backend systems for exports, proxies, media preprocessing, analysis, and agent-powered editing.
• Maintain the APIs and state contracts between the browser, workers, storage, and database.
• Improve long-running media workflows including uploads, exports, processing jobs, progress, and recovery.
• Keep the backend simple and scalable as projects, files, and usage grow.

Requirements

• Proven experience owning production backend systems.
• Strong understanding of state, queues, workers, files, and system contracts.
• Ability to translate product goals into practical backend implementation plans.
• Deep interest or knowledge in media formats, codecs, and processing.
• Language flexibility across TypeScript, Go, Rust, or Python.

Nice to Have

• Deep FFmpeg or GStreamer experience.
• Knowledge of codec internals (ProRes, H.264, H.265, BRAW, R3D, DNx).
