Role Overview
A software engineer in the Player Engineering team specialising in Android TV video playback. You will work with subject matter experts and video specialists to build and enhance playback experiences across Android TV devices using a hybrid platform combining native Android (ExoPlayer) and HTML5 WebView-based UI technologies.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of Android TV playback features using ExoPlayer and related Android media technologies.
- Support implementation of hybrid playback solutions integrating native video playback with HTML5 WebView-based UI layers.
- Assist in optimising playback performance, including startup time, buffering, and video quality across Android TV devices.
- Collaborate with frontend and platform teams to improve integration between WebView UI and native playback components.
- Help maintain and improve player architecture, including logging, monitoring, and debugging tools.
Requirements
- Professional software engineering experience or relevant academic background.
- Experience developing Android applications, ideally with some exposure to Android TV.
- Familiarity with ExoPlayer or other Android media playback frameworks.
- Basic understanding of streaming protocols such as HLS and DASH.
- Experience or interest in hybrid applications using WebView and web technologies (HTML5, JavaScript).
- Proficiency in Kotlin and/or Java.
- Strong willingness to learn and develop expertise in video playback technologies and device ecosystems.
