Backend Intern (Unpaid) – Onyatrips

Role Overview

We are looking for a Backend Engineering Intern to contribute to the systems powering the Onyatrips platform. You will work on backend APIs, databases, authentication, data processing, and integrations that support our user-facing products. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will contribute to real product features and production-oriented backend systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend APIs and services for the Onyatrips platform
• Design and implement REST APIs for frontend and mobile application features
• Work with databases, including schema design, queries, relationships, and data integrity
• Implement authentication, authorization, validation, and other backend functionality
• Build integrations with external APIs and third-party services
• Write clean, modular, maintainable, and reusable backend code
• Debug backend issues and identify root causes
• Improve API performance, reliability, error handling, and security
• Collaborate with frontend and product teams to take features from requirements to implementation
• Test APIs and backend functionality before deployment
• Document APIs and technical decisions

Requirements

• Strong understanding of backend development fundamentals
• Good knowledge of Node.js, TypeScript, and Express.js
• Experience building or consuming REST APIs
• Understanding of relational databases and SQL
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL
• Understanding of database schemas, relationships, indexes, and migrations
• Familiarity with Git and GitHub-based development workflows
• Understanding of authentication and authorization concepts
• Ability to debug problems systematically
