Role Overview
OpenGov is looking for a high-ownership, solution-oriented Data Engineer to join our rapidly growing Data Platform team. You'll work hands-on with dbt to model and transform data that powers decision-making across the organization, taking end-to-end ownership of how work gets shipped through version control, testing, and CI/CD. You will partner closely with business analytics, product, and AI teams to deliver well-structured, production-ready data solutions.
Responsibilities
- Stakeholder Engagement & Requirement Gathering: Partner with business stakeholders to translate problem statements into clear data requirements.
- Data Modeling & Transformation: Design and build dimensional and analytical data models in Snowflake using dbt (Cloud/Core) following best practices like modular layering and documentation.
- Pipeline Scheduling & Deployment: Own orchestration of dbt jobs and CI/CD workflows using GitHub Actions.
- Infrastructure Support: Work with the Data Platform team on AWS resource provisioning via Terraform.
- Data Quality & Analysis: Implement data quality checks and perform exploratory data analysis to validate source data.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field.
- 4–6 years of experience in data engineering or backend engineering.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining dbt projects in a data warehouse, preferably Snowflake.
- Experience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
- Solid understanding of dimensional modeling (star schema).
- Hands-on experience with core AWS services (e.g., S3, Lambda, IAM).
- Advanced SQL mastery and proficiency in Python.
- Strong software engineering practices including version control and peer reviews.
Nice to Have
- Working exposure to Terraform or other IaaC.
- Comfort in discovery sessions with business stakeholders.
- Exposure to a workflow orchestrator.
