Role Overview
The QA Engineer Metallurgist is responsible for the operation of metallurgical microscopes and image analyzer software, as well as sample preparation including mounting and polishing of components. The role involves detailed metallurgical analysis, heat-treatment evaluation, and mechanical testing to ensure material integrity and process compliance.
Responsibilities
- Operate metallurgical microscopes, including focusing, illumination, and sample viewing
- Manage camera interface and image capture
- Utilize Image Analyzer software for 2D measurement, grain size measurement, nodularity, flakes analysis, inclusion rating, decarb measurement, thickness measurement, and phase percentage
- Generate detailed measurement reports
- Perform basic sample preparation using mounting and polishing machines
- Conduct metallurgical analysis, heat-treatment evaluation, and mechanical testing
- Interpret microstructures of raw, hardened, and tempered materials
- Identify phases such as tempered martensite, ferrite, pearlite, and bainite
- Perform grain flow interpretation and grain boundary analysis
- Conduct core and surface hardness testing
- Provide metallurgical conclusions or acceptance criteria based on customer specifications
- Perform failure analysis and provide process recommendations or heat-treatment validation
Requirements
- Proficiency in metallurgical microscope operation
- Experience with image analysis software and measurement tools
- Knowledge of sample preparation (mounting and polishing)
- Ability to interpret microstructures and identify various metallurgical phases
- Understanding of heat-treatment processes and mechanical testing
- Ability to perform failure analysis and provide technical recommendations
